Lindsay C. Woolfolk, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Orange County High School Senior with high academic achievement and participation in OCHS athletics who plans to attend a 4-year college or university for the purpose of entering the teaching profession. Must hold a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to applicants with a combination of financial need,

Amount: $500

The Lindsay C. Woolfolk, Jr. Memorial Scholarship provides a one-year $500 award to an Orange County High School graduate who plans to attend a 4-year college or university for the purpose of entering the teaching profession. Awardees must hold a minimum grade point average of 3.0; preference will be given to applicants with a combination of financial need, high academic achievement, and participation in OCHS athletics. The scholarship may be used to pay for tuition, books, and fees and will be sent directly to the institution.

The scholarship was established by Mr. Woolfolk’s children following his death in 2015. The first scholarship was awarded in June of 2016.

Mr. Woolfolk was a proud graduate and athlete at Orange County High School, a three-sport athlete at Bridgewater College, and he received his Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia. During his 44 year career, he taught and coached at Kilmarnock, Louisa, and Orange. In his 28 years coaching at Orange, Mr. Woolfolk was one of the winningest baseball coaches in the state. He was a no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is kind of guy who believed in “hard work, discipline and togetherness”. Yet under his gruff and stern exterior, he had a gentle heart and truly cared for his students and athletes. He was proud of the fact that he had a lasting impact on them, and he remained close to many until his passing.

Besides working with Orange County youth, Mr. Woolfolk loved the New York Yankees, his farm and, most definitely, his country church where he was an active member, serving as an Elder, a Sunday School teacher, and even as Santa Claus! Being a lifelong farmer, Mr. Woolfolk derived much comfort from nature. He could be found many summer days relaxing in the shade of a massive mulberry tree at his old home place.
